d3rang3d Previews : Left4Dead
Any computer game which promises hordes of zombies - or infected to the purists amongst you - oceans of the crimson runny stuff, and the chance to shoot your way to survival against an undead horde has got to be worth checking out.
Slated for release in October '07, left4dead promises just that - the chance for single or co-operative play as you struggle against hordes of blood crazed monsters, as well as the innovative touch of also being able to play as one of the monsters.
What horror fan and PC gamer could resist the urge to jump right into the shoes of a zombie outbreak, and struggle with (or against) some online buddies in the quest to merely stay alive?

The Official Overview
Left 4 Dead (L4D) is a new action title from Turtle Rock Studios and
Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, and promises
to redefine the co-operative genre as those titles did for multiplayer
and single player action games.
Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay
of L4D casts four "Survivors" in an epic struggle against hordes of
swarming zombies and terrifying "Boss Infected" mutants.
Turtle Rock's next generation AI technology, allows for games of 1 to 8
players. Players can play as a Survivor or as one of four types of "Boss
Infected," each of whom possess a unique mutant ability such as a
50-foot tongue lasso or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas.
The gameplay takes place across four massive campaigns. The "zombie"
population of each mission is choreographed by an "AI Director" that
monitors the human players' actions and creates a unique and dramatic
experience for them on the fly.

Well, we're sold already. Horror and PC games have never mixed well - unless you are a fan of the Resident Evil series (this writer is not) - and zombies have never had a good treatment. Anyone remember the Land of the Dead Game? Just head on over to the official left4dead site and check out the trailer and the info there, you'll be sold too. This looks like one game that is going to buck the trend and give the horror type scenario an excellent outing on the PC.
If left4dead delivers on just a fraction of what it promises - and from everything we have seen it is easily going to live up to expectations - then it will become the defining game in horror FPS. The zombie really deserves a good outing in the games world - hell, the whole storyline of the dead rising/infected rampaging could have almost been tailor made for the computer age. Left4Dead looks set to be the game that will finally allow the PC gamer to enjoy the fear of the blood hungry mutant onslaught, the desperate struggle just to stay alive and, of course, the pleasure of slamming a .45 shell straight between a walking maggot factories eyes. Oh, and don't forget the chance to eat your buddies if you play as a bad guy.
We'll be sure to tell you more when the d3team gets their grubby mitts on a couple of copies and can rampage around cyberspace blasting death and destruction at all and sundry.
