As an alien race is facing certain extinction on their home world, a lone soldier is sent to Earth to prevent a vicious faction from exterminating the human race and taking over our beloved planet. As far as sci-fi-ism’s are concerned this movie has it all, classic good and evil battling it out – morality vs survilvalism, the good guy is in white and the bad guy is in black, the guy in white gets the girl and the guy in black gets a bullet, no matter how many times the good guy gets knocked down, he’ll always get back up and you know he’s gonna come back stronger…. Don’t you see what I’m talking about?
Well guess what? You watch Alien Agent and find out what I mean, because this movie for as much of a sci-fi flick as it tries to be is mostly based on old fashioned clichés and square jaw action stereotypes firing off at each other. I’ve seen this kind of thing being tried before and to be honest Alien Agent does not fare too badly in comparison to many of these types e.g. I Come in Peace and the Hidden.
The movie is actually quite a good action flick but it really is pretty soft and lame on the sci-fi front. Don’t expect any 8 legged, crazy fanged lizard like beasties in this flick, they all look human, except for the fact that the aliens are actually in the form of some electrical type discharges that can take over a human body (akin to Invasion of the Body Snatchers). Special effects in this flick are a little on the sparse side for my liking, no intergalactic ray guns or fancy space ships, pretty mundane run of the mill, bog standard human like tech that we’ve all seen a million times before.
There is fun in Alien Agent though, once the action starts to rattle along it does so at an exciting rate. Mark Dacascos may not be the greatest actor in the world he certainly knows how to do a proper martial arts sequence for the camera and this I would say is where Alien Agent’s strength lies – in it’s action. It’s just as well there is plenty of it cause if there weren’t this movie would truly have fallen flat on its face. Billy Zane puts in a fine performance as the evil commander and also Amelia Cooke puts in a fine performance as the sexy evil sidekick who is driven by a passion to save her people even at the demise of our own.
All in all I would recommend this flick to folks who are looking for a bit of sci-fi with a lot of gung-ho thrown in , it’s got big explosions and some nice babes (although no nudity), get the beer in and enjoy!
