It’s difficult not to think the term ‘cash-in’ when presented with the prospect of watching a movie called Alien vs Hunter. Well guess what..? It is. Due for release roughly at the same time as upcoming blockbuster Alien vs Predator 2, AvH takes a similar storyline to AvP2. We see an intergalactic hunter chasing a nasty arachnid type alien through the streets and countryside of a small American town, killing and smashing any human that gets in its way.
This movie is flawed in so many ways it’s hard to know where to start, firstly the hunter is not scary looking in the slightest, hell it’s almost comical looking, kind of a cross between the aforementioned Predator and Twiki from Buck Rogers. The Alien (when not being rendered in CGI) is similarly unimpressive, in fact I reckon they snatched a guy from a local bar, stuck him in a suit and said: Act scary!
Acting wise AvH is poor, nobody comes off looking good here, probably the best of them would be Dedee Pfeiffer but she ain’t going to win a palme d’or for this one, let me tell ya. I don’t know how much they paid William Katt but I hope it was a lot, I’ve seen this man put in better performances than this and I can’t help but think that Mr Katt wasn’t taking the whole thing very seriously. Can’t say I blame him.
Most low budget movies have some re-deeming qualities in one way or another, but this has nothing. I can’t recommend you to avoid this enough, do yourself a favour and invest your 85 minutes in something else. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that Asylum can produce something better next time, I believe there is a lot of potential there, too bad about AvH though. All in all, bad acting, bad special effects and bog standard storyline make this one just plain bad. AVOID.
