Touching and often moving tale challenging societies often deep seated prejudices and preconceptions, which sees a morbidly obese hairdresser begin a torrid affair with a mildly retarded zoophiliac farmer.....
Wait, sorry, wrong film.
This one's about a different kind of blob. A space blob that munches on people when it crashes to earth. And it's a remake of the 1958 film of the same name, which starred Steve McQueen.
Kevin Dillon has to shake of his bad boy past to do battle with the blob and save the world. Along the way he'll hopefully get laid by a posh chick too. Did I mention that the blob likes eating people - and that it's growing? There's your plot.
It's an entertaining movie with some cool special effects in places, though, the overwhelming difficulty which it fails to overcome is that simple initial hurdle - How scary can a big blob of purply grey snot possibly be? The answer is not very, and the film ends up with a curious feeling about it, somewhere between horror comedy, modern B-Movie, and a serious attempt at horror/sci-fi that falls short.
Still, it's fun, the cast is great and features a number of notables - Shawnee Smith gets a leading role in her pre Saw fame days, and Bill Moseley pops by for a lil too. Direction is generally good and, as already mentioned, the special effects do their job nicely. Worth watching if you haven't already, though I can't help preferring the 1958 original.
